Hidalgo Energy Center, in Edinburg, Texas, is a 477-megawatt power plant located within one mile of Calpine’s Magic Valley Generating Station. Its two combustion turbines are routed to two heat recovery steam generators, which provide steam to one steam turbine. The facility is a joint partnership venture with Brownsville Public Utility Board. Calpine owns a controlling interest (78.5%) in the facility.
In 2007, Hidalgo was named a Star Worksite under the Voluntary Protection Programs (VPP) of the U.S. Department of Labor’s Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA). The VPP Star certification is OSHA’s highest level of recognition for outstanding efforts by an employer and its employees to achieve a level of excellence in occupational safety and health at their worksites.
In 2009, the plant was granted Bronze-level membership status in the Clean Texas Program, sponsored by the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality. Clean Texas provides recognition for companies that serve as leaders among Texas workplaces that seek to achieve significant environmental results, create environmental awareness and protect air, water and land resources in Texas.
